A self-drive tour with a rental car in the Dominican Republic is the perfect way to explore the island independently and flexibly. You can expect secluded locations off the beaten track, and mostly unknown insider tips that remain hidden from most tourists. The Dominican Republic offers a well-developed road network and with Google Maps you can easily find your way around the entire island. In addition, we offer 24/7 English-speaking support and a service package so that our clients can start their trip well equipped and informed.

On request, all rental car tours can also be organized as a private transfer tour, with a local private driver or (English-speaking) driver-guide.

Day 1: Welcome to Santo Domingo

Day 1: Welcome to Santo Domingo

You will be picked up at the airport and driven by our private transfer to your hotel in the Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo.
Take the rest of the day to explore the streets of the colonial city, restaurants, bars and shops on your own.

Day 2: Santo Domingo

Day 2: Santo Domingo

The capital of the Dominican Republic combines modernity with an emerging economy and the historical center of the city, the “Zona Colonial” making this a very special place. During a private two-hour guided tour through the “Zona Colonial”, you will follow the footsteps of Columbus and will (among other things) see the oldest cathedral of the New World, castles, ruins and the residence of Columbus´s son, Don Diego. You will also visit a cigar manufacturer, where you can see the production of the popular Dominican cigars. Afterwards we will inform you about your round trip during a tropical welcome drink in our office in the Zona Colonial.

The evening will be available for you to explore the vibrant nightlife of Santo Domingo.

Day 3: Drive to Las Galeras

Day 3: Drive to Las Galeras

After picking up your rental car, you’ll head across the island to the Samaná Peninsula via a well-maintained highway. Along the way, stop at the hidden Salto Socoa waterfall and mingle with Dominicans. Once on the peninsula, you’ll pass authentic villages along the peninsula’s southern coast to the small, idyllic fishing village of Las Galeras; your home for the next few days.

Day 4-7: Las Galeras

Day 4-7: Las Galeras

On these days you will explore the exciting surroundings of Las Galeras on your own. These include Playa Rincón, a beautiful Caribbean beach, and Playa Frontón, a hidden Robinson Crusoe beach accessible only by boat. Or the village beach Playita, where you can order a delicious Dominican lunch. For sports enthusiasts, a hike along the most beautiful beaches is also suitable, which we will be happy to point out to you.

Day 8: Off to La Guazuma

Day 8: Off to La Guazuma

On day 8 you will change your accommodation in Las Galeras. Casa Paraiso Eco-Lodge awaits you with absolutely breathtaking ocean views, a refreshing infinity pool, and rooms without a front wall yet with plenty of privacy to completely immerse you in the natural surroundings. From January to March, you can watch the humpback whales here right from your room, which are in Samaná Bay during this time.

Day 9: Samaná Peninsula

Day 9: Samaná Peninsula

Today you can enjoy the remoteness and tranquility of your high-quality eco-lodge or take another excursion to the remote El Valle (“the valley”). The remote beach is surrounded by high densely overgrown hills and offers an amazing scenery. It is therefore understandable that the Tainos, the indigenous people of the island, settled here 500 – 3000 years ago, giving El Valle a very special magic.

Day 10: Drive to Las Terrenas

Day 10: Drive to Las Terrenas

Today the journey continues, once across the Samaná Peninsula to the charming beach town of Las Terrenas. But before that, you’ll stop in Santa Barbara de Samaná for a boat ride to see Los Haitises National Park, with its rock formations, countless bird species and caves once inhabited by the Taino natives. Afterwards, head to “Bacardi Island” Cayo Levantado, where you’ll enjoy free time on the beach and a delicious Dominican lunch before returning to Samaná in the afternoon and continuing to Las Terrenas.

Day 11 to 14: Las Terrenas

Day 11 to 14: Las Terrenas

Notes

From mid-January to mid-March, the Los Haitises tour on day 9 can be replaced or complemented by a whale watching tour upon request. Both tours can also be arranged as private boat excursions. All prices on request. Upon request, the Los Haitises tour on day 9 can also be replaced by a 2-hour guided hike from Las Galeras across 7 remote beaches and back by boat (during days 4 – 7).
