Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone: Following in Columbus' Footsteps

Walk the same streets as Christopher Columbus! The Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, the oldest city in the New World, is a wonderful combination of past and present, old and modern.

Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492 in what is now the Dominican Republic. This beautiful island, with its mild climate and diverse landscape, reminded him of his homeland, Spain. He claimed and conquered the island, naming it "La Española" (the Spanish). The city of Santo Domingo was founded six years later on the banks of the Ozama River. From its port, numerous explorers set sail for new conquests in the Americas and began to spread European culture. The first cathedral, the first hospital and customs house, as well as the first university in the Americas, were built in Santo Domingo. The grid system on which the city is built became a model for other cities in the Americas.

Even today, you can still experience these bygone eras. You'll find 500-year-old buildings and structures, and the original wide streets are still preserved. The first cathedral in the New World remains one of Santo Domingo's most popular attractions and should not be missed. Take some time to explore the colonial zone, wander through the narrow streets, stroll along the preserved walls surrounding parts of the city, and visit the remaining historical buildings and museums.

In recent years, the Colonial Zone has transformed into a vibrant part of the city. It offers diverse shopping opportunities, excellent restaurants, and charming little cafes. Here you'll encounter a wonderful mix of people and cultures, including numerous street performers. For the perfect end to an interesting day of sightseeing, we recommend visiting one of the outdoor restaurants on Plaza España in the heart of the Colonial Zone, such as Pat'e Palo European Brasserie, Pura Tasca, or Ristorante Angelo. Beautifully illuminated, Plaza España is a favorite spot for both tourists and Dominicans. Enjoy a delicious dinner overlooking the entire Plaza and the Columbus Alcazar, the home of Columbus's son. Relax and unwind in the evening or explore the lively nightlife of the Colonial Zone with its various bars and entertainment options.

If you'd like to visit Santo Domingo, we recommend the Hotel Portes 9*** (an affordable, cozy guesthouse in an excellent location in the heart of the Colonial Zone) or Casas del XVI***** (a luxury boutique hotel with historical elements in the Colonial Zone). We also offer city tours in various languages.

From Santo Domingo, we also offer various rental car and self-drive tours with a private chauffeur. These include a welcome meeting with a freshly prepared tropical cocktail, as well as important information about your trip and the Dominican Republic in general. Please contact us, and we will be happy to organize your personalized trip.
