The 4 most beautiful regions for road trips in the Dominican Republic

Road trips in the Dominican Republic

Road trips as a form of vacation are not as well known in the Dominican Republic as in other countries – and that's a shame, because there is so much to discover here, both on and off the roads.

Even if you sometimes need some patience for the Dominican driving style, you will be more than compensated with friendly, smiling locals in the small fishing villages, breathtaking viewpoints along your route, and numerous roadside stands with delicious local specialties.

All these impressions give you an overwhelming feeling of freedom on the streets of the Dominican Republic – off the beaten track and far from the all-inclusive resorts.

With this article, we would like to take you on a journey through the country and show you the most beautiful regions for a road trip in the Dominican Republic.
We're sure that after reading this, you'll want to book your rental car immediately and explore the country on one of our tailor-made road trips!

Road trips to Samaná

The Samaná Peninsula is rightly considered the most beautiful region of the Dominican Republic.
As you drive through the idyllic fishing villages and over the lushly vegetated mountain ranges with their spectacular views of seemingly endless coconut palm groves, you will surely agree with this statement.

Along your route you will find numerous secluded beaches that you can explore at your own pace with your rental car:
Playa Lanza del Norte, Playa Rincón, Playa El Valle and Playa Cosón are just some of the dream beaches you can reach on a self-drive tour – many of them completely untouched and often deserted during the week.

With its unique charm, lush tropical vegetation, and numerous exciting stops along the route, Samaná is an absolute must for anyone planning a road trip in the Dominican Republic.

Samana

Our recommendation:
One of the most popular hotels among our customers traveling with a rental car is the Aligio Apart-Hotel.
It is located right in the center of Las Terrenas and at the same time directly on the beach – the perfect combination of a central location and Caribbean flair.
The hotel offers excellent value for money and is an ideal starting point for exploring the beautiful surroundings.

Road trips along the north coast

There is probably no better region for a road trip in the Dominican Republic than the north coast between Samaná and Puerto Plata.
Here, small fishing villages, shady coconut palm groves and impressive views alternate – on one side the turquoise glittering sea, on the other the impressive mountains of the Cordillera Septentrional.

Considering the multitude of sights and highlights in this region, it is definitely worth splitting the journey along the north coast over several days.

Some of the most beautiful stops along this approximately 190-kilometer route from Las Terrenas to Puerto Plata include:

  • Laguna Dudú with its zipline and crystal-clear water,

  • the dreamy Playa Grande,

  • the hidden beaches Playa Preciosa and Playa Arroyo Salado,

  • the trendy seaside resort of Cabarete with its beach bars right by the sea,

  • as well as Puerto Plata with its attractions such as the cable car, the rum distillery and the historic fortress in the old town.

All these attractions are located directly along the route, making the north coast an absolute must for any road trip in the Dominican Republic.

View along the Malecón of Puerto Plata

Our recommendation:
If you would like to have enough time to explore the north coast of the Dominican Republic at your leisure, we recommend our "Land and People" tour.
With 3 days in Puerto Plata and 2 days in Río San Juan, you have plenty of opportunities to discover the numerous sights and highlights of the north coast on a self-drive tour.

Road trips through the Cordillera Central

Is there anything better for a road trip than mountains?
Breathtaking panoramas, winding roads, and constantly changing landscapes – that's what makes mountain regions around the world so fascinating. And the Dominican Republic is no exception: here, the highest peaks reach over 3.000 meters (10.000 feet).

In this region, around the mountain towns of Jarabacoa and Constanza, numerous outdoor activities await you that will make the heart of every adventurer beat faster:
🌊 Rafting on wild rivers,
🏍️ Quad tours,
🐎 Horseback riding excursions,
🧗 Canyoning,
🥾 Hiking,
🚵 Mountain biking and even
🪂 Paragliding.

All of these are good reasons to interrupt your journey through the Cordillera Central for a few days and experience this impressive region more intensively.

If you want to go even higher, you can rent an SUV and drive towards the Valle Nuevo National Park.
The highest mountain road in the Caribbean leads there (about 2.400 meters above sea level) – and it offers a unique nature and mountain experience in the Dominican Republic that you won't soon forget.

For all mountain lovers, we recommend our 4-day self-drive tour “Jeep Adventure”, which can be perfectly combined with a one-week road trip through the Dominican Republic.

Road trips in the Southwest

If you want to experience the Dominican Republic in its most authentic form, you should definitely not miss the southwest of the country.
Apart from a few small, family-run guesthouses and bed & breakfasts, tourism here is still largely undeveloped – and that's precisely what makes this region so special.

Here you can experience the Dominican Republic in all its natural beauty: untouched landscapes, warm-hearted people and an authentic, simple and happy way of life that is typical of the country's rural life.

If this appeals to you, you should definitely consider a self-drive tour in the southwest of the Dominican Republic.

A major advantage of this route is the breathtaking natural wonders that await you along the way:

  • the completely untouched Bahía de las Águilas beach, which is worth a trip in itself,

  • as well as ecological highlights such as Laguna Oviedo with its flamingos and Lago Enriquillo, the largest lake in the Caribbean.

This region is ideal for anyone seeking adventure, nature and authentic experiences – far from mass tourism and very close to the real Dominican Republic.

Breathtaking views on the road from Barahona to Pedernales

Our recommendation:
Our self-drive tour “Unknown Southwest” is the perfect opportunity to experience the unique charm of this region up close.
This road trip option can be ideally combined with other parts of the Dominican Republic – for example, with the mountain region around Jarabacoa and Constanza or the picturesque north coast.
