The selection of all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana is huge.
Around 65 resorts line the miles of white sandy beaches of Punta Cana – all offering plenty of entertainment, a tropical holiday feeling, spacious pool areas and delicious cuisine.
But which resort is right for you? What should you look for when searching for an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana? And how do you find the best hotel for your vacation in the Dominican Republic?
We'll explain some of the basics and differences between the various all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana.
And if you're still unsure which resort is best for you after reading this blog post – no problem!
Our travel experts in the Dominican Republic have firsthand experience with over 25 resorts and have visited another 20 – they will be happy to advise you individually.
Number 1: Know your budget
First, you should determine your budget.
The price differences between the cheaper resorts on the beaches of Punta Cana and the luxury options in Cap Cana – an exclusive resort south of Punta Cana – are enormous.
Some budget-friendly resorts, such as the Be Live Collection Punta Canathe Natura Park Eco-Resort & Spa or Tropical Princess Resort, are available from around 70 USD per person per night.
High-end luxury resorts, such as the Zoëtry Water Punta Cana or Sanctuary Cap Cana, on the other hand, easily charge $300 per person per night or more.
Of course, the difference in quality is clearly noticeable – but the good news is:
There are hardly any truly bad resorts in Punta Cana. As long as you don't expect 5-star luxury when you're paying for a 3-star hotel, you can have a nice vacation pretty much anywhere.
Insider tip from Dominican Expert:
Ask our travel experts about the all-inclusive resorts with the best value for money, as well as current special offers and promotions – this way you are guaranteed to find the right accommodation in Punta Cana.
Number 2: Find the right resort style
Besides the budget, the style of the resort is also crucial.
Think about what kind of vacation you want to have and who you're traveling with.
🇧🇷 For families:
If you're traveling with children and planning a family-friendly all-inclusive vacation, resorts like Memories Splash Resort or The Reserve at Paradisus are ideal. These resorts offer large family rooms, children's pools, play areas, and a variety of entertainment programs for all ages.
💑 For couples and those seeking peace and quiet:
If you prefer peace and romance, adults-only resorts like Secrets Royal Beach or Barceló Bávaro Beach are perfect. Here you can expect a relaxed atmosphere, upscale ambiance, and top-notch service.
???? For partygoers and night owls:
Do you want to dance the nights away? Then CHIC Punta Cana or Breathless Resort are just the place for you – with DJ parties by the pool, beach clubs, live music and a lively, modern atmosphere.
Insider tip from Dominican Expert:
Our travel experts know the specifics and differences of the individual all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana (and throughout the Dominican Republic) very well – and will help you find the perfect resort to suit your needs and preferences.
Number 3: Size matters!
The size of the hotel complexes in Punta Cana varies enormously – from manageable 6 hectares to huge resorts with over 100 hectares of area.
In smaller all-inclusive resorts, such as the Zoëtry Agua or the Occidental Caribe, you can walk from your room to the beach within two minutes.
In large hotel complexes, such as the Bahía Príncipe Resort or the Meliá Caribe Tropical, the walk from one end of the complex to the other can take 15 minutes or more – ideal if you like to explore and move around.
Whether you feel more comfortable in a compact, cozy resort or prefer a sprawling complex with many restaurants, pools and activities – that depends entirely on your personal travel style.
Insider tip from Dominican Expert:
Large resorts have the advantage that you can discover and explore more during your vacation. In smaller resorts, on the other hand, you don't have to walk as much – which, after all that delicious food, can certainly be a plus.
Number 4: Look at the map
While the size of the resorts can vary greatly, their locations are usually quite similar:
All all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana (as well as in Bayahibe, Samaná, Puerto Plata and the rest of the Dominican Republic) are located directly on the beach.
In some cases, however, you have to cross a sister resort to get to the sea – for example at the Grand Bahía Príncipe Punta Cana or the Grand Memories Resort.
The biggest difference, therefore, lies less in the distance to the beach and more in the region where the resort is located:
???? Uvero Alto, Macao, Arena Gorda, Cabeza de Toro and Cap Cana
These areas are somewhat remote, but offer quieter beaches and less hustle and bustle.
However, if you want to leave the resort, you will usually need a taxi to get anywhere.
🏖️ Bavaro Beach
If you'd prefer to experience a bit of local life, you've come to the right place.
Resorts like the Now Larimar or the Palladium complex are so centrally located that you can leave the resort and enjoy typical Dominican flair right next door – with small shops, bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

If you're staying at an all-inclusive resort but still want to explore the beautiful Dominican Republic, you can book a rental car or one of our tour packages with us – this way you can get to know the country beyond the resort walls. 🌴🚗
Number 5: Understand the star rating
Don't be confused by all the so-called "5-star resorts".
There is no official star rating system in the Dominican Republic, which is why most all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana simply award themselves five stars – regardless of whether it's a budget hotel (like the Be Live Collection Punta Cana or Natura Park Eco Beach Resort & Spa) or is a genuine luxury hotel.
To realistically assess the quality of a resort, you should therefore rely on the recommendations of your travel advisor or on independent review portals.
These will give you a much more honest and accurate picture of what to really expect at the respective hotel.
Insider tip from Dominican Expert:
Based on our own experience and extensive hotel knowledge, we have developed our own rating system.
Most budget all-inclusive resorts receive 4 stars from us, while some top hotels even deserve a 6-star rating.
A 5-star rating from Dominican Expert is your guarantee for a carefree and high-quality vacation in the Dominican Republic. 🌟
Number 6: Know what (and how) you want to eat
The saying "The way to a person's heart is through their stomach" can easily be transformed into:
"Holiday happiness goes through the stomach" – at least for most of us. 😉
Therefore, it is important to choose a resort that offers particularly good food.
Generally speaking, all all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic serve decent cuisine.
Even budget hotels offer tasty, solid meals, but they usually lack special culinary touches or variety after a few days.
A slightly higher travel budget is therefore worthwhile – because the food quality is significantly better in mid-range and luxury resorts.
Some of our best culinary experiences so far have been at Paradisus Palma Real and Excellence El Carmen. 🍽️
Next to the What plays that too Who an important role:
Would you prefer to eat at the buffet or do you prefer à la carte?
Almost all resorts offer buffet restaurants in the evening (one of the few exceptions is, for example, the [resort name]). Viva Wyndham V Samaná on the Samaná Peninsula).
But the real difference in quality lies with the à la carte restaurants:
At resorts in the AMResorts group, you can eat à la carte as often as you like, without a reservation.
In many other hotels, reservations are required – and these are not always available for every evening, especially in more affordable establishments.
Therefore, if food and culinary variety are important to you on vacation, you should take a closer look when choosing a resort – your palate will thank you!
Number 7: Choose the right drinks
Speaking of food and drink – for many travelers, beverages are a key component of a successful all-inclusive holiday in the Dominican Republic.
Who doesn't love enjoying an ice-cold drink while lying in the sun, gazing out over the pool or the sea? 🌴☀️
If you mainly drink beer, soft drinks or fruit juices, you'll be well catered for in any all-inclusive resort.
Almost all bars serve the popular Presidente, the Dominican Republic's national beer, on tap – fresh and ice-cold. 🍺
The difference between budget and upscale resorts becomes more apparent when it comes to cocktails:
In mid-range or luxury establishments, the cocktails are more balanced in taste, are often made with higher-quality ingredients, and are sometimes even freshly mixed.
If you value premium alcohol, handcrafted cocktails and bar-quality drinks, it's worth booking an upscale resort – for example:
???? The Level at Meliá Caribe Tropical
🍸 or one of the AMResorts hotels (e.g. Dreams Punta Cana)
These resorts offer high-quality branded spirits in all bars – perfect for connoisseurs who like their cocktail to be as good as in a real beach bar in the city.
Number 8: Know the best party spots
Besides the classic “3S” – sand, sea & sun – many travelers in the Dominican Republic are also looking for fun and nightlife.
Although almost every resort has its own hotel disco, these are usually only moderately attended.
However, there are two resorts that are clearly leading the way in terms of partying, style, and nightlife:
🎉 CHIC Punta Cana
🎶 Breathless Resort
Both offer themed evenings, creative parties, live DJs and a young but stylish audience.
In addition, there is high-quality food, modern rooms and a trendy ambience – perfect for anyone who wants to celebrate in style on holiday and doesn't travel on a mini-budget.
Other hotels, such as the Hard Rock Punta Cana or the Tropical Princess Resort, also have discos that are open to external guests.
These are usually much livelier and more action-packed, however, drinks are generally not included in the all-inclusive offer. 🍾
Number 9: Consider whether VIP upgrades are really worth it.
Almost every all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic offers a VIP category or "Club Level" in addition to the standard rooms.
These upgrade options usually include numerous additional amenities, such as:
✨ Premium Alcohol
🏖️ Exclusive beach areas
🏊 Private Pools
🍸 Access to VIP lounges
🛎️ Enhanced services and more personalized support
Of course, all of this sounds very tempting – but is the extra cost really worth it?
That depends entirely on your travel habits and expectations.
In some resorts, these VIP upgrades start at just 20-30 USD per person per night, while other resorts charge up to 100 USD per person per night.
So if you spend a lot of time at the beach or on excursions anyway, the upgrade might not be worth it.
However, if you value peace and quiet, exclusivity and first-class service, the VIP level can be an excellent addition to your all-inclusive experience.
